»Trolamine is a mixture of alkanolamines consisting largely of triethanolamine [N(C2H4OH)3]containing some diethanolamine [NH(C2H4OH)2]and monoethanolamine [NH2(C2H4OH)].It contains not less than 99.0percent and not more than 107.4percent of alkanolamines, calculated on the anhydrous basis as N(C2H4OH)3.
Packaging and storage— Preserve in tight,light-resistant containers.
Identification—
A: To 1mLadd 0.1mLof cupric sulfate TS:a deep blue color is produced.Add 5mLof 1Nsodium hydroxide, and concentrate to one-third of the original volume by boiling:the blue color remains.
B: To 1mLadd 0.3mLof cobaltous chloride TS:a carmine-red color is produced.
C: Heat 1mLgently in a test tube:the vapors turn moistened red litmus paper blue.
Specific gravity á841ñ: between 1.120and 1.128.
Refractive index á831ñ: between 1.481and 1.486at 20.
Water,Method Iá921ñ: not more than 0.5%,a mixture of 5.0mLof glacial acetic acid and 20mLof methanol being used as the solvent.
Residue on ignition á281ñ: not more than 0.05%.
Assay— Transfer about 2g of Trolamine,accurately weighed,to a 300-mLconical flask.Add 75mLof water and 2drops of methyl red TS,and titrate with 1Nhydrochloric acid VS:each mLof 1Nhydrochloric acid is equivalent to 149.2mg of triethanolamine,expressed as N(C2H4OH)3.
