Licorice Fluidextract
»Prepare Licorice Fluidextract as follows (see Pharmaceutical Compounding—Nonsterile Preparations á795ñ).To 1000g of coarsely ground Licorice add about 3000mLof boiling Purified Water, mix, and allow to macerate in a suitable, covered percolator for 2hours.Allow the percolation to proceed at a rate of 1to 3mLper minute, gradually adding boiling Purified Water until the glycyrrhiza is exhausted.Add enough diluted ammonia solution to the percolate to impart a distinctly ammoniacal odor, and boil the liquid actively under normal atmospheric pressure until it is reduced in volume to about 1500mL.Filter the liquid, evaporate the filtrate on a steam bath until the residue measures 750mL,cool,gradually add 250mLof Alcohol and enough Purified Water to make the product measure 1000mL,and mix.
Packaging and storage— Preserve in tight,light-resistant containers, and avoid exposure to direct sunlight and to excessive heat.
Labeling— The label states the Latin binomial name and, following the official name, the part of the plant source from which the article was derived.
