Ethyl Chloride
»Ethyl Chloride contains not less than 99.5percent and not more than 100.5percent of C2H5Cl.
Packaging and storage
Preserve in tight containers, preferably hermetically sealed, and remote from fire.
Reaction
Shake 10mLwith 10mLof water, both having been previously cooled to 0,and allow the supernatant layer of ethyl chloride to volatilize spontaneously:the remaining liquid is neutral to litmus.Retain the liquid for the test for Alcohol.
Alcohol
To the liquid obtained in the test for Reactionadd a few drops of potassium dichromate TSand 2mLof 2Nsulfuric acid, and boil the mixture:no odor of acetaldehyde is perceptible, and no greenish or purplish color is produced.
Limit of nonvolatile residue and odor
Allow 5mLto evaporate spontaneously from a tared, shallow dish:no foreign odor is perceptible while the last portions evaporate, and the weight of the residue is negligible.
Chloride
Add a few drops of silver nitrate TSto 10mLof alcohol, cool to 0,and add to the clear liquid about 500µLof Ethyl Chloride cooled to the same temperature:no turbidity is produced immediately.
Assay
Introduce about 1.5mLof cold Ethyl Chloride into a tared glass-stoppered pressure bottle containing 25.0mLof 1Nalcoholic potassium hydroxide VS,rapidly replace the stopper, and weigh accurately.Tie down the stopper, insert the bottle in a wire basket, and immerse in a water bath at room temperature.[CautionBefore raising the bath temperature, take adequate precautions to cover the bottle or erect a suitable safety shield to prevent injury in case the bottle should burst.
]Heat the water bath to boiling, maintain at this temperature for 30minutes,and then cool gradually to room temperature before handling the bottle.Remove the stopper, add phenolphthalein TS,and titrate the excess alkali with 1Nhydrochloric acid VS.Perform a blank determination (see Residual Titrations á541ñ).Each mLof 1Nalcoholic potassium hydroxide is equivalent to 64.51mg of C2H5Cl.
